GZIP

The abbreviation GZIP stands for "Gnu ZIP". GNU is the recursive acronym for the open source operating system GNU ("Gnu is Not Unix" or "GNU's not unix"). The format was intended to compress single files or data streams.

Developing format and source codes was mainly the merit of Jean-loup Gailly and Mark Adler. In addition to GZIP (Jean-loup Gailly) and GUNZIP (Mark Adler) both had developed the open source library ZLIB as well.

One of the most important considerations was to create a format that is independent from legal restrictions by patents. For that resaon GZIP was specified as RFCs. Source code and various programs like GZIP and GUNZIP are published under the terms of the GNU General Public Licence (GPL).

GZIP is not compatible with the common ZIP format as specified by PKWARE despite of there names. Because ZIP is using the same compression method as GZIP (among others) most of the common commercial applications support GZIP decoding.
